Saturday November 24th 2012 is Buy Nothing Day. It’s a day where you challenge yourself, your family and friends to switch off from shopping and tune into life. For 24 hours, try and detox from shopping, by spending a day without spending.

To assist, we’ve created an ad blocking plug-in for Chrome that replaces online ads with calm, soothing blocks of colour on Buy Nothing Day – helping reduce the constant pressure and enticement to shop.

We sees the world simply. We favour strong democracies, and see capitalism as a cornerstone of a strong democracy. We also see advertising as a cornerstone of that capitalism.

However, we believe that in some countries consumption has reached excessive proportions for many people. We want to support people being more aware of their consumption choices, and make better choices. For this reason we want to stop advertising for a day, and encourage people to stop and think about their consumption choices, without being told to buy anything from anyone.

A better-informed consumer will lead to consumption choices that make people happier and more satisfied.
